Playing on old work laptop.
« on: August 28, 2014, 10:59:49 am »
Hello,

I just spent the last 32 hours getting from my home in St. Pete, FL to Hobart, Tasmania for a month long work assignment.

So now I'm stuck playing on my old work laptop.  Aside from lowering video settings, can anyone suggest anything to adjust (in game or on my laptop) that might help play-ability?

I was on bones3 a little while ago.  Had 250-300 latency, but I was able to kill a bot or three.  Not sure how it will be with other humans on the server.

Anyways . . . let me apologize in advance to anyone who might have the misfortune of playing with me for the next month or so, I'm afraid I'm going to suck worse than normal.

Although, I'm not a techie...I'm sure there are many others here who are (i.e. Gen. Dumnut), who can definitely help out with this.  That said, post your computer specifications.  And it would likely help them to evaluate what modifications/settings are needed to help with your problem.

I originally was playing on a P4 processor Like 12 years ago with 512MB of ram and a 40GB HD. With an intel integrated 32mb video card.
Although your laptop is new age and the latest and greatest. It is over kill for this game as is almost all of our PC's here.

Some of my concerns would be first and foremost internet connection.
How are you connecting to the internet and who manages that internet, your work, hotel or someone else.
Alot of the times firewalls and ports are locked out preventing the game from communicating with the server properly.
Also, what internet connection speed are you on? www.speedtest.net

If it ends up not being those things. Then there may be an application such as antivirus or local firewall preventing the game from operating properly.
Lastly, what OS are you on? (Win 7, 8 or XP)?

You're absolutely right.

I can set up a local server on my laptop and do battle against plenty of bots at the highest settings.

But from my hotel here in Hobart the best latency I can to any server is +400ms.

Oddly it's no better to servers in NZ and Australia than it is to ours in Texas.

On the plus side I am getting some much needed practice.

Yep.  The last few days have been crew training and that's done, bon voyage to them.

Tomorrow morning the boat heads off to Azerbaijan and I start the 26 hours trip home.
